EXHIBITION ON VIEW

HERESIES BY PEDRO MEYER

heresiesPedro Meyer, Grandma's picture, Ciudad Madero, Tamaulipas, Mexico, 1987 (original) 1998 (last version).
Collection of El Museo del Barrio, NY, (detail).

Mexican photographer Pedro Meyer’s “Heresies” — opening simultaneously in 60 museums worldwide — is a four-decade retrospective by one of the world’s most innovative image-makers. After an early start as a documentary photographer, Meyer began using digital technology in the early 1990’s to combine photographic elements from disparate times and places, thus arriving at a different or higher truth. Meyer’s contention that all photographs — digitally manipulated or not — are equally “true” and “untrue” has been labeled heretical among traditional documentary photographers, hence the title “Heresies”.  At El Museo, images on view include musings on Latin American religious imagery, the lives of immigrants, and the 1968 Mexican student uprising, among other themes.

Admission: Free. El Museo’s galleries are under renovation! This exhibition is open only on Saturdays and can be seen by guided tour only, beginning October 11, 2008 through June 30th, 2009. Tours in English start at 2:00 pm. Tours in Spanish start at 3:00 pm. Please meet museum educators five minutes before the tour at El Museo’s entrance on the corner of 5th Avenue and 104th Street. Groups of 10 or more must make an advance reservation for a private tour by emailing tours@elmuseo.org

La Frontera Infinita / The Infinite Border
By now, most Americans are familiar with the arduous path Mexican migrants take to cross the border. But another group travels perhaps an even harder route: Central Americans who traverse all of Mexico—hopping dangerous moving trains and facing prejudice from Mexicans—on their way to the United States. "The Infinite Border" tells their story, yet resists casting them in a melodrama. Instead of painting the migrants as helpless victims, director Juan Manuel Sepúlveda simply follows their daily lives, as they move north along a seemingly endless train route.

"It wasn't a question of showing the reasons for migration, or the percentages or statistics, it was about offering a story told by its own protagonists," says Sepúlveda. "Along the way, in shelters and train stations...they laughed, made fun of each other, talked of hope, prepared food, washed clothes, meditated, played soccer, waited, sang. It became less a film about Central American migration and more one about human beings with problems shared by the rest of humanity."

Running time: 90 minutes.

Admission: $9. Please note: Space is very limited so we highly recommend ordering advance tickets at http://www.rooftopfilms.com. El Museo members may attend free, but must RSVP 24 hours in advance to: Nazira Handal at (212) 660-7143 or nhandal@elmuseo.org to reserve seats. Please bring your membership card to ensure preferred seating. Media sponsors: NY Remezcla, and LATV’s American Latino TV and Latination TV.

Sleep Dealer, Dir. Alex Rivera.
In the near future, the world’s borders are completely sealed…except for a giant digital network linking people around the world. In Mexico, workers plug their bodies into computers to labor from afar for huge first-world companies. Some even sell their memories online. But not everyone is happy to become a virtual robot. Three strangers in Tijuana eventually risk their lives to connect with each other--and break the chains of technology.

“Exuberantly entertaining.” –A.O. Scott, New York Times

“Remarkably topical...like Blade Runner and other big-brained sci-fi flicks, it’s about ideas, not selling merchandise.” –Jason Silverman, Wired

Soulfrito Nuevo and El Museo Del Barrio present
Seventh Annual Coquito Tasting Contest
Saturday, December 13, 2008, 6:30 - 8:30pm

Kick off the holiday season with a coquito, the traditional yuletide drink of the Caribbean. Sample the unique recipes developed over the centuries by people from different towns in Puerto Rico. Vote for your favorite while you hang out with friends and neighbors—or compete in the recipe contest yourself! First, second, and third prizes will be awarded. Feliberto Estevéz, Executive Chef at Gracie Mansion, will be present as guest judge.

This year, we’ve added a special treat: spoken word and music from our favorite O.G. Nuyorican poet Emanuel Xavier (of Pier Queen, Nuyorican Poets Café, and Def Poetry fame) together with musicians El David, Nelson Baez & friends. Emanuel will perform his poetry in harmony with the native Puerto Rican beats of bomba and plena and the concrete sounds of Nuyorico.

The performance will include live sneak previews of Emanuel Xavier's forthcoming spoken word/music compilation CD, Gomorrah.

For information on the contest or to RSVP for the party, email Debbie Quinones at drq104@yahoo.com.
