El Museo del Barrio relies on the support from Interns for numerous programs, projects, and events throughout the year. Opportunities are available for high school, undergraduate, and graduate students who are considering careers in the arts, education, and museum profession. These Internships provide exceptional ways to gain practical museum experience working among a variety of departments, while being guided by a direct supervisor and department team. Positions offer rewarding and valuable learning experiences with chances to meet and interact with new people,
and develop overall familiarity with El Museo’s collection and Latin American and Caribbean art and culture. Interns receive guided supervision performing
a number of responsibilities that frequently include research as well as program and event planning, coordinating, implementation, and evaluation onsite at the Museum and offsite.

Education Department Internships
El Museo’s Education and Public Programs Department is dedicated to providing its diverse community with quality bilingual education programs. Through guided tours, hands-on workshops, school partnerships, family programs, cultural festivals, and adult public programs, El Museo reaches out to include people of all ages, particularly our community’s youth. While offering an important resource for the Latino and Latin American communities in New York City and the tri-state area, El Museo’s programs are carefully designed to be accessible to all audiences. Using the Museum’s collection and exhibitions as a foundation for teaching and learning, El Museo’s education programs offer visitors multiple entry points through which to explore works of art in-depth and in personally meaningful ways.
El Museo del Barrio offers interns an opportunity to interact with experienced museum professionals and network with artists and museum professionals. The Museum provides a training ground to learn theoretical approaches to education and programming and pratical hands-on application.

Curatorial Department Internships
The Curatorial Department is responsible for the exhibitions that are presented at El Museo del Barrio, as well as the Permanent Collection entrusted to its care. The Curatorial staff are made up the Director of Curatorial Programming, various Project Coordinators, Registrar, Assistant Registrar, and the Curatorial Assistant.
An Internship at El Museo del Barrio should be a match between your skills and expectations and our needs. ArtsIntern Positions
ArtsIntern positions are paid internship opportunities for summer, 2008. ArtsInterns have a practical work experience among Museum staff while gaining exposure to the variety of cultural institutions and arts in New York City. The ArtsIntern positions are full-time employment (35 hours per week). Positions at El Museo del Barrio are listed below.

Volunteer Opportunities
Public Relations Volunteer
El Museo del Barrio, New York City’s leading Latino and Latin American arts and cultural institution, is seeking a volunteer to work in the Public Relations Department. The volunteer provides a great opportunity to gain experience and establish contacts in the arts. S/he will report to the Manager of Public Relations, as well as interact with all departments of the Museum in assisting with various projects as well as with the media and general public.
Responsibilities will include:
- Drafting media alerts for programs and events
- Maintaining Press Archive
- Assisting with the coordination of special events, including press previews and exhibition receptions
- Following up with media on press releases
- Updating media lists and assisting with mailings and distribution
Community outreach and promotion
Skills/ knowledge:
Must have working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel
Possess excellent communication and writing skills.
Possess some graphic design skills
Written and spoken proficiency in Spanish are a plus but not essential.
A minimum of eight hours per week (Monday – Friday) for at least a four-month commitment is required.
- Education Audience Development Volunteer
The Museum is seeking a volunteer to work with the Education Department’s growing database of museum audience contacts, while participating in the promotion of programs in conjunction with exhibitions. This position offers an opportunity to learn more about the Museum’s programs, share information about the Museum’s exhibits and programs with our audience of students, educators, families, adults, and greater community. This is an opportunity to meet new people, exercise and develop computer skills and learn new software programs.
Responsibilities will include:
- Update student, educator, family, adult, and community audience contacts in database.
- Assist with program mailings for the Museum audience
- Support the development of printed and electronic email announcements to promote programs and events
- Support and participate in community distribution of program information to schools or organizations as needed
Skills/ knowledge:
- Must have working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel
- Must be detail-oriented and have strong organizational skills.
- Ability to work well with others
- Bilingual skills in English and Spanish are a plus but not essential.
A minimum of six hours per week (Monday – Friday) for at least a six-month commitment is required. Some evening opportunities may be available.
- Creative/ Design Volunteer for 30th Annual Three Kings’ Day Parade
The Museum is seeking volunteers to work with the costumes for the 30th annual Three Kings’ Day Parade, which will take place on January 6, 2007. This festive, cultural holiday is observed in Puerto Rico, the greater Caribbean, Latin America, and throughout the United States. El Museo’s dynamic parade, led by the Three Kings, winds through the streets of El Barrio and includes lively music, colorful costumes, as well as an educational theatre program for students following the parade. This position offers an exciting opportunity to learn more about the Museum’s Parade as well as participate in the making of costumes to be used in the parade, and help design/ repair the three puppets used in the procession. It is an excellent opportunity to meet new people, participate in an important community event in El Barrio, and have fun showing off your creative skills.
Responsibilities will include:
- Sew, repair, and help design costumes and puppets
- Assist with design and repair of floats
- Assist in the preparation, ironing, cleaning, etc. of costumes
- Utilize any creative skills you may have
Skills/ Knowledge:
- Must be comfortable with sewing with a machine or by hand
- Must be comfortable with styling, designing fabric, floats, costumes
- Must work well with others and in a team
A minimum commitment of eight hours per week (Monday-Friday) until Jan 6th is required. We encourage participation in the festivities and the parade itself, though it is not a requirement. Some evening opportunities may be available closer to the date of the actual parade. We can offer great recommendations for school, university, or employment to the right candidates, as well as an excellent working team, and great working environment.
