DÍA DE LOS MUERTOS:
At The Metropolitan Museum of Art, 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. At El Museo del Barrio, 1 p.m. - 4 p.m. This special collaboration between The Metropolitan Museum of Art and El Museo del Barrio celebrates the ancient Mexican tradition of the Day of the Dead. Beginning at 11 a.m. at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, families are invited to join educator-led gallery talks of the Pre-Columbian collection, view films, and experience a live performance with Mexico Beyond Mariachi. Then at 1 p.m., hop on a shuttle bus to El Museo del Barrio to continue festivities and learn more about the traditions of this ancient feast day. At El Museo, honor your ancestors and celebrate the cycle of life and death through gallery talks by participating artists in El Museo's Bienal: The (S) Files/ The Selected Files. Join artist educator-led art activities, enjoy music and dance performances, taste traditional foods, and add to our communal altar.Due to limited seating reservations are suggested at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. RETRATOS FAMILY DAY WATCH PORTRAITS COME ALIVE! In this special collaboration between El Museo del Barrio and the Museum of the City of New York ( Fifth Avenue at 104th Street ), spend the day exploring portraits and the stories they tell about people and places. FROM 12-4 PM AT EL MUSEO, children and families are invited to explore Retratos: 2,000 years of Latin American Portraits. Join us for a fun-filled afternoon with bilingual gallery tours led by artist educators, storytelling, and art-making activities. Participants can also create their own family portrait using period costumes, hats, and accessories inspired by works in the exhibition. FROM 12 PM-1:30 PM, AT THE MUSEUM OF THE CITY OF NEW YORK, families can view the photographic portraits in El Barrio: Puerto Rican New York and create a framed portrait with artists and supplies from Materials for the Arts, a program of the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs.
